Poland fights EU protectionism

The Polish government has objected to growing economic protectionism among the EU member states. Prime Minister Donald Tusk last week spoke out against the practice, and instead called on other member states to speak with a common voice in times of economic crisis.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who was to take part in the informal EU summit in Brussels last weekend, also planned to admonish EU states for protectionist moves and to discourage growing enthusiasm for the concept of eurobonds.

Poland strongly objects to the recently discussed idea of replacing national bonds with common eurobonds within the euro zone. According to the government, the introduction of eurobonds would radically affect the Polish economy, causing foreign investors to lose interest in Polish bonds. “[Investors] will want to throw the weak [bonds] overboard,” PM Tusk said in the Sejm last week, commenting on the plan.
